Self-Direction for All: A Training for Program Stakeholders

This training presentation is from Applied Self Direction and was presented over two days in 2018. The presentation describes how self-directed services are different from traditional services, the importance of planning and budgets, and how to take self-direction to the next level. Infographics are included throughout the presentation.

Frequently Asked Questions: Georgia Independence Plus Initiative

These FAQs describe self-determination, self-directed service delivery, and how the Georgia Independence Plus Initiative is involved in offering self-directed services. Georgia’s Department of Human Resources and Department of Community Health amended Home- and Community-Based Waivers for people with disabilities and older adults to offer self-direction options.

Self-Directed Supports ARE SELF-DIRECTED SUPPORTS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Ask yourself the following questions: Would you like to have more authority to plan your supports based on the lifestyle you choose? Do you want to be more involved in your community and in those activities that interest you? Would you like to hire the staff of your choice and have more say in how your budgeted dollars are spent? If you are saying “yes” to any of these questions, then the Division of Developmental Disabilities in Missouri has a Self-Directed Service option for you.

State of Missouri: MoHealthNet Developmental Disabilities Waivers Manual

The Missouri Department of Mental Health’s Division of Developmental Disabilities (Division of DD) administers four Medicaid Home- and Community-Based Services (HCBS) Waiver programs for individuals
with developmental disabilities. The four waivers are:

  1. Comprehensive Waiver
  2. Missouri Children with Developmental Disabilities Waiver (MOCDD or Lopez Waiver)
  3. Community Support Waiver
  4. Partnership for Hope Waiver (PfH)

Under HCBS waivers, a state may use Medicaid funding for home- and community-based services provided only to a target group of people who have I/DD and whose care needs would otherwise require services in an institution. The Division of DD uses general revenue funds and local county dollars to match federal dollars to pay for HCBS waiver services.

Self-Direction in Waiver Services

Currently, recipients of the New Opportunities Waiver (NOW), Children’s Choice Waiver and Residential Options Waiver have the option of receiving services through a provider agency or through Self-Direction. The Self-Directed option gives you the most control over your supports, but also more responsibility. Here are some important facts:

An Overview of Self-Determination and DDS Service Models

All DDS staff are required to be familiar with the concepts of self determination and DDS’s service models that provide options for individuals to direct their own supports. This training provides an information overview. DDS staff have a variety of opportunities to learn more about self direction.

Factsheet: The Use of Arrangements that Support Self-Determination in Shared Living Arrangements

This factsheet was prepared to provide information about how two or more people who receive services and supports from the public mental health system can share living space and even share staff while maintaining the essential elements of arrangements that support self-determination (control of an individual budget and the ability to choose and fire their own providers and workers).

Choosing Which Service Method is Best for You

The Participant Directed Program (PDP) offers the most flexibility to arrange and customize supports based on the individual’s needs and preferences. The individual can hire their own support staff and make other decisions about how to use their DDS funded allocation.
